Tourism ministers raise concerns over airport security charges
An ABC report says that a joint letter from the Northern Territory and federal tourism ministers has been sent to Federal Transport Minister Mark Vaile, raising concerns over airport security charges.
Passengers travelling through Darwin and Alice Springs airports are paying about $14 extra for their tickets to cover upgraded security.
The two towns missed out on federal subsidies that were recently granted to regional airports.
NT Tourism Minister Paul Henderson says he believes his federal counterpart Fran Bailey recognises his concerns.
“I’m very optimistic that both sides of politics will take action to provide relief to Territory airports and Territory travellers, [over] the unfair costs associated with implementing the new security costs,” he said.
“I’ve had a meeting with Fran Bailey – she’s agreed to take up the issue with the federal Transport Minister, Mark Vaile.”
A spokesperson for Mr Vaile says once the letter is received from Ms Bailey, the issue will be considered.
