Tourists back on ‘The Beach’ in Thailand
Thailand’s famed Maya Bay is again welcoming tourists. The beauty spot on Phi Phi Leh in the Andaman Sea has been closed to visitors for over three years.
It closed before the start of the pandemic, due to damage inflicted by rampant overtourism. Maya Bay became globally recognised as the location for the 2000 film The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
The break from tourists has helped Maya Bay heal naturally with coral regrowth and the return of sharks, Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand said.
There is a strict limit of only 375 visitors allowed at any one time.
