Tourists in Majorca branded ‘terrorists’
Tourists in the Majorcan capital Palma have been branded ‘terrorist’ by locals who claim the island has been swamped with visitors this summer.
Graffiti condemning the tourists has been daubed on the walls of the city’s old town, including slogans such as ‘Tourists go home. Refugees welcome,’ and ‘Tourist you are the terrorist’.
An estimated 67 million tourists will visit Spain this summer, including three million Britons in Majorca, which is more popular this year due to fewer people holidaying in Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia.
Some locals told The Sun newspaper they were worried the crowds were changing the atmosphere in Palma’s old town and putting a strain on water supplies.
Numbers are also swollen every day by the arrival of cruise ships in Palma, some carrying as many as 4,000 passengers each.
The Sun newspaper allegedly spoke to locals who were angry at the increase in arrivals. They quoted one local who said: "We want fewer Brits here. Let them go somewhere else."
However, British holidaymakers told reporters they were unaware of the discontent and the locals ‘have been nothing but welcoming’
