Tourists should ‘prepare for disruption’ over possible Tenerife strike action
Holidaymakers heading to the Canary Islands this summer could still be hit with disruptions in destination as hospitality workers in Tenerife threaten to strike.
Unions are pressuring employers for a quick resolution or strikes could take place as early as next month.
Workers have demanded a 6% pay increase.
One union has called on Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo, and regional tourism and employment minister, Jéssica de León, to intervene in the dispute.
They managed to prevent previous strike action at Easter.
It has been a long running issue for several months.
However, union leaders in Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura secured pay increases to avert any further strike action.
Industrial action would affect operations in hotels and restaurants.
If it goes ahead, it is thought one-day strikes every Friday would take place weekly.
It could include pickets and protests directly outside major hotels on the island.
