Tourists warned after gun violence spike in Cancun
Concerns are growing for tourist safety in Cancun after a deadly 36 hours earlier this month saw 14 people gunned down.
Another five also suffered gunshot wounds.
So far this year more than 100 have become victims of a turf war between rival gangs.
US visitors are being advised not to yoop8uyuwertake unnecessary risks in the resort town.
"Cancun is considered an area where the American people should exercise some caution," advised Carlos Gonzalez Gutierrez, the Mexican Consul General in Austin.
"Tourism is an extremely important industry for us, it has increased at approximately 10 percent per year for the last four to five years and that means that for Mexico and for the Mexican government it’s extremely important to exercise all cautionary measures," he added.
Gutierrez said on-the-ground security has been significantly strengthened.
So far the US State Department hasn’t upgraded its travel advisory for Cancun yet and remains at a ‘Level 2’, which asks travelers to ‘exercise caution.’
