Tourists warned over Labour Day demonstrations in Turkey
The Foreign Office has warned British travellers in Turkey of the possibility of demonstrations today.
May 1 is Labour Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, in the country and unauthorised demonstrations are often held in public areas.
Visitors to Istanbul are advised to keep away from the areas of Disk Genel Merkez and Taksim Square, although the British Government warns there is a risk of violence elsewhere in the country.
The FCO said: "Demonstrations may occur throughout Turkey on May 1 2018 and have in previous years become violent in some areas.
"You should avoid all demonstrations and follow the instructions of the local police authority."
Local reports say members of outlawed groups have been detained in a pre-emptive operation by authorities over the past few days.
