Training people – a story continued
Bev Brightspark, owner and manager of Brilliant Travel arrived at work to find the new consultant, Mandy Marvel, waiting on the doorstep for her.
‘Hi, Mandy’ said Bev. ‘You’re here bright and early. Most of the other consultants don’t arrive till around 8.30.’
‘8.30!’ exclaimed Mandy. ‘My last manager expected me to be in at the same time as him, even though I didn’t get paid till 9. He was usually at his desk by 8 every day and he used to make sarcastic comments if I came in after him.’
‘Really…’ said Bev. She was quite familiar with the workings of Bert Braveheart, the owner/ manager of Run of the Mill Travel where Mandy had come from. He was of the ‘old school’. Worked in the business rather than on it, took as many famils for himself as was possible and expected principals to bend over backwards to meet his often unreasonable demands. Many of these demands were to help him fix up costly mistakes.
Bev was well aware of Bert’s reputation for hiring young staff at cheap rates, promising opportunities for the future but providing them with no training or development. When the inevitable mistakes were made, his usual course of action was to shout at them, dismiss them as ‘useless’ and thereafter make their lives so uncomfortable that they invariably resigned. Bert seemed unable to acknowledge that it was his unwillingness to take time to develop his staff that resulted in the mistakes.
‘Ah well’ thought Bev ‘No one can accuse me of not developing my staff.’
As she checked her Outlook calendar, Bev saw that she was down to three staff today – of the others, one was on a famil, one on a day off and a third attending a training course.
‘OK’ thought Bev. ‘If I want to do this induction with Mandy, I’d better get started right now before the phones start ringing’
Find out next time – what did the Induction consist of and how did Bev juggle it with all the other demands on her time…
