Travel chaos continues into second day
Ryanair has been forced to cancel 15% of its total schedule today, including 160 flights to and from the UK, and easyjet has cancelled 20% of its flights into and out of France, due to a French air traffic control strike.
However, British Airways said it had only cancelled 14 shorthaul flights and delays this morning were not as bad as yesterday.
"We have not been as badly affected as some other airlines," said a BA spokesman. "Our average delay yesterday on short-haul flights was around half an hour, today it is about five to 10 minutes."
He said larger aircraft where being put on routes with cancellations to try to minimise disruption. "On the whole we don’t have the same problems as airlines like easyJet and Ryanair that have bases in Europe," he added.
The six-day strike, which started yesterday, is affecting some flights that travel via French air space as well as flights to and from France.
EasyJet said that as 65% of its flights go over French airspace, it was expecting significant delays to many of its flights and further cancellations were expected throughout the day.
UK airports are advising customers to check their flight status before leaving home.
