Travel firms to be hit by ‘Mobilegeddon’

Monday, 20 Apr, 2015 0

Travel agents and tour ops could be penalised by Google if their website is not mobile-friendly after changes to the search engine.

Google is overhauling the way its search engine ranks website with a new algorithm from tomorrow.

It will now favour those that are ‘mobile friendly’ in mobile searches, while penalising those that are not.

The changes will only affect mobile searches but with mobile now accounting for half of all google searches it could have a big impact on some travel firms.

The Financial Times reports some search engine optimisation experts have dubbed the shift "Mobilegeddon", and predict that those not ready for the change will suffer heavily.

A spokesman for ABTA said: "Most Members who get a significant amount of business online will have already adapted their sites to ensure that they are mobile friendly as mobile bookings represent a growing and increasingly important sector of the online market.

"However, we are aware of these changes at Google which will mean that non mobile friendly sites will no longer feature in Google rankings and we will shortly be publishing guidance from an ABTA Partner, which is a leading expert in this area."
