Travel Foundation extends remit
Sustainable travel charity the Travel Foundation is to assist the Moroccan government in delivering responsible tourism blueprint.
The Travel Foundation is to also extend its sustainable tourism initiatives from Tobago to the wider Caribbean region.
The organisation will collaborate with the Moroccan National Tourist Office on a range of initiatives focused on engaging UK visitors and the travel companies that bring them to Morocco.
This will begin with a seminar in January to be delivered jointly with MNTO and the Federation of Tour Operators to bring practical approaches to sustainable business to the attention of Moroccan tourism suppliers.
A key initial focus will be on water and tourism. The collaboration will include encouraging visitors to support a project to restore The Marrakech Palm Grove, an eco-system and natural and cultural tourist attraction that has suffered from the effects of development and drought.
Travel Foundation chief executive Sue Hurdle said: “We look forward to the challenge of helping to preserve such a beautiful destination for the enjoyment of future generations and for the benefit of the people of Morocco”.
Abbas Azzouzi, CEO of the Moroccan National Tourist Office, said: “I am extremely pleased that the Travel Foundation will be working closely with the Moroccan National Tourist Office to achieve the goals that we have to develop a sustainable tourism industry in Morocco.”
In the Caribbean, the charity has secured the endorsement of the Caribbean Hotels Association and the Caribbean Tourism Organisation to extend its programme across the region with the aim of bringing greater benefits to people and environment through tourism.
This service will complement those offered to the trade by the Caribbean Alliance for Sustainable Tourism, the environmental division of the Caribbean Hotel Association, in relation to performance standards for health and safety, energy conservation, environmental management systems and disaster risk management.
