Travel Foundation urges operators to follow TUI’s lead
TUI Travel’s three-year-plan to sell greener holidays has been welcomed by the Travel Foundation, which called on other travel companies to consider their own impact on the environment.
Chief executive Sue Hurdle said: "TUI Travel’s new Sustainable Holidays Plan acknowledges the dependence of the travel industry on fossil fuels, destination communities and environments and reaffirms the company’s commitment to improving its impacts."
TUI has pledged to operate Europe’s greenest aircraft by 2015 and it has outlined 20 steps to cut its carbon footprint, save energy and reduce the damage caused in resorts by tourism.
Hurdle added: "It is positive to see the organisation setting itself new and stretching targets and we hope this move will inspire others in the industry to consider their own impacts, to seek out innovative ways of addressing these challenges and start reaping the benefits sustainability offers.
"No matter how large or small, everyone has a part to play."
