Travellers warned as Florida braces for ‘major disaster’

With Hurricane Ian forecast to be a major hurricane, travellers in Florida are being warned about strong winds, life-threatening storm surge and 10-15 inches of rain.

Visit St Pete Clearwater says Pinellas County is preparing for evacuations, and visitors are also asked to evacuate as a precaution.

The US National Hurricane Center issued advisories for western Florida including the Tampa Bay area.

Governor Ron DeSantis warned of ‘major disaster with dangerous storm surge, heavy rainfall, and flash flooding.’

It could develop into a category 3 storm with 120mph winds.

The island could see up to 10 inches of rain from Hurricane Ian, while Jamaica and the Cayman islands could receive between 3-6 inches.

Ian is expected to make landfall in Florida’s by Wednesday.
