Travellers warned to avoid Adelaide Airport as coronavirus cluster expands

Travellers planning to fly out of Adelaide Airport are being urged to reconsider as  a cluster of coronavirus cases escalates.

South Australian Premier Steven Marshall says he may order the airport to close if it cannot be contained.

According to South Australia Health’s deputy chief public health officer, Michael Cusack, there are now 11 cases of covid-19 among baggage handlers at the airport.

In addition two family members of baggage handlers were also infected.

"As a result we are expanding the testing criteria to anyone who is sick with symptoms of coronavirus who has been at the airport, including in the terminal or the carpark in the last 14 days," Cusack said.

The union representing baggage handlers accused Qantas of not protecting its workers.

"We are informed that following an initial infection not enough protections were put in place to stop the spread. This is very serious as it means Qantas allowed its workers and workers in other companies to become exposed through its own negligence," said Transport Workers Union SA branch secretary Ian Smith.

On Monday Qantas had to cancel seven Adelaide flights as a result.

More than 100 people have been put into isolation.
