TravelMole Interview: Roger E. Block, executive vice president, Carlson Wagonlit Travel, Associate Division

Monday, 24 Feb, 2004 0

A recent Carlson Wagonlit survey shows a resurgence of travel to Europe and has other good news as well. Said Roger E. Block, the company’s executive vice president: “On top of our findings for the strength of bookings to Europe, we’ve also seen a significant increase in demand for cruises. The momentum that we’re seeing with Europe and cruises is the best we’ve had in three or four years.” Nearly two thirds of Carlson Wagonlit Travel Associates said European bookings were up, while another 23% said bookings were at least holding steady. “By all indicators, travel to Europe among Carlson Wagonlit Travel’s customers is fully rebounding to pre-9-11 levels,“ said Mr Block. He said one of the major reasons is pent-up demand. As for cruises, Mr Block said: “January marked the traditional Wave Month for the cruise industry, and if our experience was any indication, the cruise lines will be enjoying a lot of first-time cruisers.” Mr Block said the survey of 158 travel associates in the US also came up with strategies for advising consumers how to maximize their dollar in Europe. These included: —Use tour packages to lock-in values that include not only ground transportation but also meals and escorted tours. —Travel during the off-peak season before summer when there are low airfares from many major US gateways. —Use cruise packages, which agents said represented a very cost-effective and novel way of seeing Europe, especially since most meals are included.
