Tribute in Light over World Trade Center tonight
The "Tribute in Light" will be lit tonight over the World Trade Center as New York honors the dead and the first responders who tried to save them on 9/11 a dozen years ago.
Eighty-eight searchlights at the site of the World Trade Center will create two vertical columns of light into the Manhattan sky, in remembrance of the September 11 attack.
Meanwhile, One World Trade Center is coming to life, and is scheduled to be completed in 2014.
The 104-story building at the northwest corner of the World Trade Center site got its final piece of spire in May, making it 1776 feet tall.
Four World Trade, a transportation hub, an observation deck and a performing arts center will open in 2015, along with an elevator that will shoot tourists from the ground to the top in just seconds.
Ten million visitors have come to the site since the museum opened two years ago.
A memorial across the river in Jersey City features two walls inscribed with the names of New Jersey residents who died, outlining the spot where the World Trade Center used to stand.
On Long Island, a memorial service is being held at Point Lookout in Lido Beach.
