Tropical cyclone Sandy takes New York by storm
Hurricane Sandy made landfall near Atlantic City around 8pm local time on Monday, unleashing its power on the US eastern seaboard with maximum sustained winds of about 80 miles per hour.
The National Hurricane Centre reclassified the storm as a post-tropical cyclone as the life-threatening storm surge brought down trees and power lines.
Forecasters said tropical-storm-force winds could stretch all the way north to Canada and all the way west to the Great Lakes.
Up to 60 million people could be affected, with hundreds of thousands ordered to evacuate homes. More than 1.5 million people have lost power.
Subways were shut down from Boston to Washington, as were Amtrak and the commuter rail lines.
About 1,000 flights were cancelled at each of the three major airports in the New York City area. Philadelphia International Airport had 1,200 cancelled flights, according to FlightAware, a data provider in Houston.
The Conrad New York Hotel in Battery Park evacuated its guests yesterday to the Hilton Hotel in midtown.
The New York Stock Exchange, public transport, beaches, parks and schools will be closed on Tuesday. Broadways shows have been cancelled since Sunday.
The Global Business Travel Association is predicting that a hurricane with the strength and breath of Sandy and a peak duration of 1-2 days could cost the travel industry USD606 million in lost revenue and about 514,000 trips.
Earlier, a replica of the H.M.S. Bounty, a tall ship built for the 1962 movie Mutiny on the Bounty starring Marlon Brando and used in the recent Pirates of the Caribbean series, sank off the North Carolina coast.
