TTP Feature: Eastbourne school wins sustainable study award
A note from the Travel and Tourism Programme:
Two students from an Eastbourne school have been awarded funding to produce a tourism case study that can be used by students throughout the world studying leisure and tourism.
Ratton School has beaten schools from throughout the UK to win the Aldo Palpone Award, an award to fund production of a UK based case study on sustainable tourism. Students from the school will prepare a case study featuring the sustainable future of Eastbourne as a tourist destination.
Dean Putland and Daniel Wheatley, both aged 15, will produce the case study with the guidance of their teacher Tim Isard. They will show how Eastbourne is planning for the future considering the needs of visitors, residents and the local environment.
The award is organised by Springboard Charitable Trust, a registered charity that provides educational support for hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism.
Springboard’s Travel and Tourism Programme works closely with partners from around the world as members of the Global Travel and Tourism Partnership, a global organisation that aims to increase educational standards for courses relating to tourism, the world’s fastest growing industry.
The case study prepared by the two boys will include detailed materials for students and a manual for teachers. It will be used as a learning resource for tourism related educational courses in all member countries of the Global Travel and Tourism Partnership including UK & Ireland, USA, Canada, Brazil, Jamaica, Hong Kong, South Africa, Russia and Hungary.
Dean, Daniel and their teacher Tim Isard will travel to Germany in November to attend the International Student Conference in Frankfurt. Here, they will present their study to fellow students and representatives of the global tourism industry.
Both of the Year 10 students are thrilled to have been awarded the Aldo Palpone Award. “My parents could not believe me when I told them we had won the award” said Dean Putland, who also studies French and Sociology along with GCSE Travel & Tourism.
Daniel Wheatley says he is really looking forward to both working on the case study as well as “an opportunity of a lifetime to attend the conference and meet fellow students from 10 countries.”
For teacher Tim Isard, it comes at a time when Travel & Tourism is becoming one of the fastest growing GCSE subjects at the school. “We’ll have 25 students in next year’s Year 11, but 72 have opted to take the subject in next year’s Year 10, so this award is a very satisfying reward for our efforts to expand the course at the school.”
The Headteacher, David Linsell, said “The school has gone from strength to strength over the last two years, and I’m delighted that investment in curriculum development and infrastructure reaps rewards such as this prestigious international award.”
