TUI Travel is in the top 10 per cent of green companies in the FTSE 350 for the second year running.
The travel giant has been included in the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index for being within the top 35 firms for carbon reduction.
Meanwhile, Thomas Cook has also been commended by the Carbon Disclosure Project for its approach to climate change disclosure after taking part in the project for the first time since the company merged with MyTravel in 2009.
Independent analysis revealed that TUI had a carbon footprint of six million tonnes last year, which equates to 77.9kg per passengers. A spokesman for the company said it planned to reduce its emissions by a further six per cent by 2013.
Thomson and First Choice managing director Dermot Blastland called for companies to be more transparent about their carbon emissions.
“It is rare within our industry to set carbon targets that stretch a business and which they have to report against clearly, in order for stakeholders and customers to understand,” said Blastland.
“Outside pressure is known to improve performance. If companies do not set objectives that they are accountable for then they are not going to work as hard to achieve them.”
