TUI: US bookings have significantly declined
Demand for transatlantic travel to the US has waned ‘significantly’ says travel giant TUI.
It says Europeans are booking less to the US, with Asia and the Middle East growing in popularity.
CEO Sebastian Ebel cited ‘significantly lower demand.’
“What we do see is growing business to the Emirates and Asia. We also see European demand to the Caribbean, which – due to capacity – had not been the biggest priority in the past, but there we see now potential again to grow.”
It comes amid numerous data sources suggesting travel across the Atlantic is declining, although at a rate below earlier forecasts.
Issues over immigration enforcement and tariffs have had an effect as the US jointly hosts the World Cup with neighbours Canada and Mexico this year.
The US National Travel and Tourism Office recently said visitation to the US from Western Europe is down about 4% but is higher than this in some countries.
Despite the US travel decline, TUI just enjoyed its best ever first quarter.
