Tune strikes a chord in India
KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s Tune Hotels group is partnering with Apodis Hospitality Group to establish 20 Tune Hotels.com properties across India by 2012.
Apodis Hospitality operates, develops and invests in hospitality assets across three segments: leisure, business and low-cost.
Under the terms of the partnership, five Tune Hotels.com hotels are targeted to be operational in India by December 2010 with a staggered roll-out of the subsequent 15 hotels to be completed by end 2012. Sites are yet to be finalised.
Mark Lankester, CEO of Tune Hotels.com, said, “Demand for hotel rooms is soaring in India as its economy blossoms.
“Having said that, India’s hotel industry is still very much in its infancy – I saw recent reports that put India’s total hotel room count at just 130,000 rooms, for a country of almost 1.2 billion people.
“In comparison, although the population of Malaysia is just a fraction of India’s at slightly over 28 million people, last year the Malaysian hotel room count surpassed 160,000 rooms. So clearly, there’s a huge need and demand for more hotels.”
Umesh Luthria, business head of Apodis Hospitality Corporation said, “The limited-service model espoused by Tune Hotels.com is relevant in both larger and smaller cities in that it fits the profiling of the average modern Indian traveller: price-conscious yet still demanding of clean, quality essentials in secure surroundings.
“Our aim at Apodis is to be to hotels what Volkswagen is to cars – i.e. to build safe, stylish hotels at value for money matched by few in this class.â€
