Tunisia extends state of emergency

Tunisia has extended its state of emergency by a further three months.

The UK Foreign Office (FCO) has updated its travel advice to include the extension.

The state of emergency was first announced in November 2015 following a suicide attack on a police bus.

At the time the FCO was already advising against all but essential travel to Tunisia after a terror attack in a beach resort in Sousse killed 30 British holidaymakers.

The FCO lifted restrictions at the end of July, meaning UK travellers can now visit the main beach resorts.

However, the FCO says terrorists are still very likely to try to carry out attacks in Tunisia and there are still restrictions against ‘all travel’ or ‘all but essential travel’ to non-tourist regions.
