Tunisia puts its hopes in maritime and wellness tourism strategy

Tunisia is reinforcing its standing as a leading Mediterranean destination for health and sustainable tourism, with internationally recognized thalassotherapy centers helping position the country as the world’s second-largest hub for health tourism, according to Tourism Minister Sofiane Tekaya. The remarks were reported by Tunis Afrique Presse, a partner of TV BRICS.

Thalassotherapy—long popular in coastal resorts such as Hammamet, Sousse and Djerba—remains a key pillar of Tunisia’s tourism offering, attracting European and regional visitors seeking marine-based wellness treatments and year-round spa experiences. The sector continues to support the country’s broader strategy to diversify tourism beyond traditional sun-and-sea travel.

Tekaya also highlighted Tunisia’s expanding maritime infrastructure, noting the country operates six major marinas with more than 2,930 berths.

These facilities are increasingly seen as strategic assets for boosting yachting tourism, coastal mobility, and regional economic integration along the Mediterranean corridor.

At the core of Tunisia’s long-term development plan is a stronger focus on the blue economy and sustainability, integrating tourism with environmental protection and local economic development. Each coastal region is being positioned as a combined tourism and investment hub, leveraging the country’s extensive shoreline and island territories.

Several Tunisian islands have been identified as key platforms for future eco-tourism and scientific tourism initiatives, with planned investments in renewable energy, sustainable maritime transport, and innovation-driven projects.

The government says the approach is designed to maximize the value of Tunisia’s natural and maritime resources while strengthening its competitiveness as a sustainable tourism destination in the Mediterranean, aligning tourism growth with climate-conscious and community-based development goals.
