Turkey worries hit Thomas Cook sales
Thomas Cook UK customers fell by 2.8% to 846,000 in the first half of the financial year ending April 30.
UK sales revenues for the winter period were down by 1.9% to euros 735.3 million
The comapny said this was “primarily due the the recent uncertainty surrounding holidays in Turkey triggered by bird flu, Turkey having been a very popular holiday destination for British holidaymakers”.
Summer forward bookings for Thomas Cook UK are down by 0.6% against the same period last year.
The German-based group saw total sales rise by 1.3% in the half-year ending April to euros 2,436 billion with more than 3.2 million holidaymakers travelling.
Thomas Cook AG finance director Ludger Heuberg said: “The favourable market developments in Germany did not entirely make up for the difficult conditions in other European markets, particularly in the UK.”
