TV news crew arrested after fake bomb discovered at airport
Seven members of a cable TV news crew were arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport after trying to sneak a fake explosive through TSA security screening.
According to NJ.com, a film crew contracted by cable network CNBC attempted to smuggle a PVC pipe with wires sticking out of it in a carry-on bag while covertly filming.
CNBC declined to make a comment.
TSA officers detected the item and they were promptly arrested.
They were later charged with causing false public alarm, conspiracy and interfering with transportation, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The item had ‘all the makings of an improvised explosive device,’ the TSA said.
The crew were from Endemol Shine, a Netherlands based production company.
"We are looking into the details of what happened as a matter of priority and are in contact with relevant authorities on the ground. While this process is ongoing we are unable to comment further but in the meantime, we sincerely apologize for any disruption caused," said Julie Holland, a spokesperson for Endemol Shine North America.
"The preliminary investigation indicates that all were in collaboration and claimed to be working for a television network," said Lisa Farbstein, TSA acting director of media relations.
The crew members could also face civil penalties of up to $13,000 for each charge.
