Two dead after fire at Shanghai Airport

Two people are reported dead and five injured after a fire broke out at a Shanghai airport.

The blaze in Terminal 1 of Hongqiao Airport in Shanghai took firefighters more than an hour to bring under control, authorities said.

The five people taken to hospital include two in a serious condition.

Local media outlet Xinmin Wanbao reported the fire started in a basement area that was being renovated.

An area measuring about 100 square metres was damaged in the fire with a thick column of smoke seen rising from the terminal building early Friday morning.

No flight operations were affected, airport officials said, and the identities of those dead and injured have not been released yet.

Investigators believe thermal insulation material being installed on the site was the likely cause of the fire.
