Two million feet and no vertical limit for heli-skier
Ultimate powderhound Heinz Steiner fresh tracked his way to a major milestone this week by skiing 2,000,000 vertical feet with New Zealand’s largest heli-ski company Harris Mountains Heliski.
Mr Steiner reached his milestone on 15 August in stunning weather and great heliski conditions when he and Harris Mountain Heli-Ski (HMH) guide Hugh Barnard went out for another ‘perfect day’.
Mr Steiner dedicates two weeks every year to heliskiing with Harris Mountains Heliski in Wanaka with Hugh.
Mr Steiner came to New Zealand 24 years ago in search of the ultimate untracked powder skiing adventure and found it. He says that although he has been heliskiing in India, Alaska, Canada and Russia. he keeps coming back to Harris Mountains Heliski because he enjoys the guides and the amazing terrain.
For me, it’s all about the place, people and experiences……….“Harris Mountains Heliski has some of the best helicopter skiing in the world with thousands of vertical feet of untracked snow to explore.
“Hugh is highly experienced and I consider him to be the top of the field.” “He makes every day interesting – new terrain to explore and always with an emphasis on safety which is very important to me.”
“In fact the whole HMH crew provides a great end-to-end experience – they’re all top professionals in their field and manage to combine just the right mix of safety and adventure.”
Hugh Barnard, 11 years as operations manager and head guide for HMH, is quietly chuffed that he’s been along for the ride with Mr Steiner.
“Reaching 2,000,000 vertical feet is a real milestone and major achievement for any heli-skier.” “Heinz is a great bloke which makes my job all the more enjoyable.”
Harris Mountain Heli-Ski operates from the lakeside resorts of Wanaka and Queenstown, and the Mount Cook region.
