Two tourists killed by erupting volcano
Two tourists have reportedly been killed in an Indonesian volcano eruption that has cause the evacuation of some 20,000 people.
The Times reports that the tourists were killed by falling rocks after Mount Bromo, in East Java province, erupted on Tuesday.
Three more people are missing, with the thick smoke and ash being spewed into the atmosphere making rescue attempts impossible at the present.
The 2,392-metre volcano is situated some 750km from the capital Jakarta.
The Times quotes one vulcanologist as saying that Mount Bromo is a very unpredictable volcano: “The character of the volcano is different from the others. Small earthquakes that were recorded two days ago are quite usual for active volcanoes, but it suddenly erupted.”
The nationality of the two tourists has not been reported.
