Typhoon Utor disrupts flights and shipping

Saturday, 15 Aug, 2013 0

Typhoon Utor, which has lashed the Philippines and Hong Kong in recent days, is now causing problems in other parts of Asia.

Malaysia Airlines had to reschedule flights from and into Kota Kinabalu and Hong Kong as Utor moved on from China’s southern coast.

Budget airline AirAsia also cancelled several flights connecting Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Philippines to Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

The weather condition also forced Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific to cancel several flights.

A cargo ship sunk off Hong Kong during fierce storms.

Malaysia’s meteorological department said Utor was the cause of heavy rain and high winds in Sabah in the past few days.

Considered the worst typhoon to hit the Philippines this year, Utor killed six people and displaced over 30,000 families, causing landslides and floods and disrupting power and communication links.
