Uber cuts 600 jobs in India

Tuesday, 26 May, 2020 0

Uber revealed 600 jobs will go in India as part of its global cost-cutting measures.

It comes after Uber announced a second round of job cuts last week, reducing its global workforce by about 6,700 in total.

The 600 jobs represent about a quarter of its Indian workforce.

"The impact of Covid-19 and the unpredictable nature of the recovery left Uber India with no choice but to reduce the size of its workforce. Around 600 full time positions across driver and rider support, as well as other functions, are being impacted," said Pradeep Parameswaran, president of Uber India.

"Today is an incredibly sad day for colleagues leaving the Uber family and all of us at the company."

Before the pandemic Uber said it was gearing up to be profitable based on earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization by the year-end.

Uber’s main India rival has been hit just as hard by the weeks-long Covid-19 national lockdown.

Last week homegrown ride hailing rival Ola announced it is shedding 1,400 jobs.
