Uber suspends shared ride service
Uber has suspended its Uber Pool shared rides service ‘to help flatten the curve on community spread’ of covid-19.
The service, which matches up to four passengers in a single vehicle based on their destination has been halted in all cities in the US and Canada.
It is evaluating extending the suspension to other cities globally.
Uber on-demand individual rides and food deliveries will continue as normal.
"We remain in close contact with local leaders and will continue to work with them to discourage non-essential travel," said SVP of Uber Rides and Platform, Andrew Macdonald.
Users will now see a message in the app urging them to ‘travel only when necessary.’
Uber and rival Lyft have promised paid sick leave to drivers diagnosed with covid-19 or placed in quarantine and unable to work.
