UK airport strikes off
A Reuters report says that union officials in the UK have called off strikes at seven British airports set for later this month after accepting a deal over pensions, the Unite union said on Thursday.
The union had threatened to carry out a series of one- and two-day strikes at seven airports, including the busiest London’s Heathrow and Gatwick, over plans by airports operator BAA, owned by Ferrovial, to close final salary pension schemes to all new employees.
“They have called off all the strikes,” a Unite spokesman said. “They have accepted the results of the negotiations this week.”
Unions had said the decision to close the schemes had been taken without consultation and scheduled three days of strikes to take place on January 7, 14 and 17, threatening the travel plans of thousands of people.
