UK embraces Jubilee party spirit
Britain is gearing up for a party atmosphere as four days of celebrations get underway on Saturday to mark the Queen’s 50 years on the throne.
Estimates from the English Tourist Council (ETC) predict that around one third of Britons will take part in a Golden Jubilee event of some kind over the long bank holiday weekend. ETC is also predicting that £1bn will be spent on domestic tourism during the Jubilee week.
ETC Chairman Alan Britten said: “English tourism will certainly benefit from both the Jubilee celebrations and the extra Bank Holiday at the weekend. The Golden Jubilee has helped to remind those of us who live here about the range of wonderful attractions on our doorstep, as well as bringing in more visitors from overseas. We’re very positive about the prospects for a bumper Bank Holiday weekend.”
Street parties are being held across Britain and many thousands are expected to go to Buckingham Palace for a spectacular classical music concert on Saturday evening.
Shedding light on the event will be a total of 1,956 beacons, which are being lit across the UK with many more in all of the Commonwealth countries.
