UK mulls cruise ships to house migrants
The UK government could deploy out of service cruise ships, barges and military bases as new homes for migrants.
It is expected to detail new alternatives to hotel accommodation today.
Immigration minister Robert Jenrick is set to make an announcement later.
It includes old cruise ships moored in southwest England.
The government is seeking cheaper options as it is spending over €5 million per day on migrant hotels.
Deputy PM Dominic Raab said ships would only be used for asylum seekers if they can be managed ‘safely and responsibly’.
“We will look at the whole range of options for low-cost accommodation.”
The Times reported a giant barge was under consideration.
It would be able to house hundreds of people.
PM Rishi Sunak has said hotels are not a long-term option due to the cost.
