UK prepares to batten down the hatches
The worst storm of the year is heading to the UK this weekend, forecasters are warning.
Strong winds and heavy rain will increase over the weekend, developing into a significant storm across England and Wales on Monday.
Met Office spokesperson Juliet Gardner told the Independent forecasters had issued an amber warning for strong winds and the highways agency has put out a yellow alert for a surface water flood risk from Monday.
"If the storm arrives in line with current predictions then some areas along the south coast could see some of their strongest winds for a number of years," she said.
The Met Office warned there would be "significant disruption" from the storm, which is set to develop in the west Atlantic on Saturday.
The Independent said: "Atlantic storms of this type usually develop much further to the west of Britain and lose much of their strength before they reach the UK.
"Forecasters said this storm was unusual as it has developed much closer to UK and could potentially be tracking across the country while still in its most powerful phase."
