UK set for vaccine milestone as zero deaths reported
The UK is on the brink of reaching another key milestone a day after recording zero Covid deaths for the first time since July last year.
The country is closing in on three-quarters of all adults having received at least one Covid jab.
The milestone is expected to be reached today.
As of late Tuesday that figure stood at 74.9% of adults, or a total of 39.4 million.
It comes as authorities said yesterday there were no deaths within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19.
The only other day that has happened since the start of the pandemic was 30 July 2020.
"The vaccines are clearly working – protecting you, those around you and your loved ones," said Health Secretary Matt Hancock.
However there were still 3,383 new cases recorded on Monday and fears are still high over the spread of the Delta (Indian) variant.
It has reported more than 3,000 new infections for seven days in a row.
"We haven’t beaten this virus yet with cases continuing to rise," Hancock said.
Still, the zero deaths and vaccine milestones will likely support calls to further ease restrictions on international travel and add more ‘green list’ destinations.
Latest media speculation suggests Spain’s Balearic and Canary Islands as well as Malta could be added but no final decision has been made yet.
