UK terror group ‘planned London Eye attack’

The ISIS terror group cell behind the Paris and Brussels attacks planned to target the London Eye, it has been claimed.

It comes as multiple arrests were made late last week  – one involving a 26 year-old man from Birmingham as he arrived at Gatwick off an easyJet flight from Marrakech in the early hours of Friday morning.

Three men, aged 26, 40 and 59, and a woman, 29, were also arrested in Birmingham on Thursday night by West Midlands police on suspicion of preparing acts of terrorism.

Crucial evidence taken from the phone of Mohamed Abrini – a key player in the Paris and Brussels attacks who was recently arrested – is believed to have led to the UK arrests.

"The network were targeting the London Eye and other places where crowds gather in the UK," a source told The Mirror.

"Britain was second after France on their list of countries in which to launch an attack.

"British officers have been expecting an attack in the UK and still do."

Police said on Friday that no targets had been identified but pictures of a football stadium and shopping centres were on suspects’ phones.

Assistant chief constable Marcus Beale, who leads on counter-terrorism for the force, told the BBC the operation was part of an ‘extensive investigation’, and the arrests were ‘pre-planned and intelligence-led’.

Another 18 year-old man from Birmingham was arrested at Manchester Airport on Saturday for ‘Syria-related’ terrorism offences as he arrived in the UK.

Police said his arrest was not related to the previous five arrests in relation to a suspected UK terror cell. He has since been released on police bail.
