UK to give another £70 million to islands hit by hurricane
British islands in the Caribbean are to receive a further £70 million from the UK government to help rebuild following the devastation caused by hurricanes Irma and Maria.
They will also receive up to £300 million of UK loan guarantees to help those worst affected to access finance.
The financial aid is expected to be announced today at an annual gathering of the leaders of the 11 British Overseas Territories in Downing Street.
Prime Minister Theresa May will tell them that the package ‘demonstrates the UK’s ongoing commitment to help its overseas territories as they get on with the difficult work of recovery’,
Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands and Turks and Caicos were among those who suffered the worst storm damage. The UK government has already committed £92 million to the region-wide relief effort.
