A British tourist has died in India after falling off the ledge of a temple while taking a selfie.

Roger Stotesbury, 58 was at the Lakshmi Temple in Orchha, Northern India when he somehow slipped and fell about 30 feet.

Local official Rakesh Khakha told the Times of India "He was taking a selfie and fell down. He was rushed to Ramraja hospital where he died."

A UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesperson told the Mirror newspaper: "We are providing assistance to the family of a British man following his tragic death in India."

Stotesbury and his wife were on a ‘middle aged gap year’ round the world trip and had already visited 22 countries.

India was the final country before returning to the UK.

India actually has highest number of selfie-related deaths in the world, according to research published earlier this year.

It said 76 of the 127 reported selfie deaths from March 2014 to September 2016 occurred in India.
