UN Tourism and TUI Care Foundation join hands to support rural artists and artisans in Africa
Five African NGOs will now receive funding to support artisans and uplift communities through a groundbreaking joint project by UN Tourism and the TUI Care Foundation.
The Colourful Cultures initiative places artists and artisans in rural communities at the center of tourism development in Africa. The first call for proposals attracted 141 applications from non-profit organizations across the continent. Five selected projects will benefit communities in Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, and Tanzania through financial support and additional capacity-building.
The announcement marks a milestone for UN Tourism, which for the first time is providing direct financing and technical assistance to grassroots organizations. The selected initiatives will support artisanal livelihoods, strengthen social inclusion through tourism, and boost the creative economy in remote communities.
Shaikha Al Nuwais, Secretary-General of UN Tourism, said: “This first call for proposals for the Tourism for Rural Development Small Grants, enabled by the TUI Care Foundation, reflects our commitment to community-led tourism in rural areas. The awarded projects provide important local foundations for creatives and entrepreneurs in rural Africa. They not only advance economic empowerment but also help position tourism as a key driver of rural development.”
Thomas Ellerbeck, Chairman of the TUI Care Foundation, added: “Together with UN Tourism, the TUI Care Foundation is proud to provide support and financial assistance to rural communities and further strengthen tourism’s role as a driver of rural development. We strongly believe the carefully selected projects will generate a positive impact for both host communities and their visitors.”
Through this partnership, UN Tourism and the TUI Care Foundation promote tourism as a catalyst for community-based solutions, innovative financing, and sustainable transformation in rural areas.
