Union ‘positive’ about Cook merger
Union chiefs have broadly welcomed the merger of Thomas Cook’s and The Co-operative Travel’s retail outlets, even though it could lead to the loss of hundreds of jobs.
Usdaw, which represents more than 1,000 staff at The Co-operative Travel and Midland’s Co-operative Society, said it was ‘very positive’ about the venture.
"Usdaw believes it will help secure the long term future of the Co-operative’s travel businesses and maintain their presence on the high street," said national office Sharon Ainsworth.
"While there will obviously now be some uncertainty for our members, I do not think the announcement will have come as a complete surprise to them as they are fully aware of the challenges the travel industry has faced over the past few years."
The merger, which is expected to be completed by Christmas, will create the largest UK travel agency chain but Thomas Cook chief executive Manny Fontenla Nova admitted shops will close, putting hundreds of jobs at risk.
"Usdaw will have full consultations with the Co-operative Group over the coming months and our key aim will be to secure as many jobs as possible and to support and represent our members throughout this period of change," added Ainsworth.
The merger is subject to clearance by European Commission regulatory authorities.
