United Airlines Houston-Havana service to go daily

United Airlines will boost its Houston-Havana route to daily service beginning in July.

The airline says it received tentative US Department of Transportation approval to expand the current once a week service to daily.

United said increased frequency will begin from July 20.

"United’s new daily service to Cuba will offer more opportunities to connect our customers traveling from Houston and the central and western United States directly to Havana," said Patrick Quayle, United’s vice president of International Network.

"Houston is United’s gateway to Latin America and its convenient location offers customers easy access to connect to 44 destinations across our broad domestic network."

United said it will deploy United either Boeing 737aircraft or Embraer E175 regional United Express branded jets operated by Mesa Airlines.

The news was warmly welcomed by the city of Houston.

"This expansion to Havana will provide significant public benefits to our city, region and state. As a diverse global city – in which many people speak Spanish – we are heavily reliant on international travel for our economic success," said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.

The Houston service is the only service direct to Havana from the central and western United States.

United also offers daily nonstop service between Newark and the Cuban capital.
