United cuts more jobs
United Airlines is to cut more jobs as part of its plan to achieve $1.1bn a year in staff savings.
The airline is trying to win approval of a federal loan guarantee and consequently avoid the bankruptcy court.
The carrier, which is also trying to trim $1.4bn a year in other costs, said it hoped to return to profitability in 2004.
By 2004, the airline will be left with 74,000 employees compared with the current level of 83,000. United employed more than 100,000 before the September 11 attacks.
United plans to reduce its capacity by 6% in 2003 to achieve its goal of shrinking by 23% compared to pre-September 11 levels.
