Universal theme park deal backed by half a billion in transport upgrades
Universal has formally filed planning permission papers for its proposed first UK theme park near Bedford.
It is seeking approval of a ‘Special Development Order’ from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
This is for ‘an entertainment resort complex featuring a world-class theme park with several themed lands, visitor accommodation, as well as a range of retail, dining and entertainment uses,’ Universal says.
The impact for the local area and the UK economy will be ‘transformative.’
The company touts it will generate 28,000 jobs and as much as £50bn of economic benefit.
“At opening, the entertainment resort complex would be one of the largest employers in the region, with approximately 80% of employees expected to come from Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes,” Universal added in the submission.
By submitting the plans direct to the Ministry, the government will ultimately make the decision, rather than the local authority.
Universal said the plans have made provisions for environment protections and will ‘deliver several long sought-after transportation upgrades’.
This will enable an expanded Wixams railway station as well as various road improvements.
This will be facilitated by £500 million of public investment the government has pledged in transport infrastructure upgrades.
“The past year has enabled us to closely engage with Bedford Borough Council, neighbouring authorities, national government, transport and environmental bodies,” Universal said.
