Unruly passenger causes 30-hour flight delay
An airport has described US-bound passengers as being ‘remarkably understanding’ when their flight was diverted and delayed for 30 hours because of an unruly passenger.
United Airlines flight 971 arrived at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Sunday night, over a day late.
The Rome-Chicago flight was forced to divert to Northern Ireland on Saturday because a passenger was being disruptive.
After touching down, the flight was not allowed to take off again, because flight crew had exceeded their permitted number of working hours, so the 269 passengers and 14 crew members were told they’d have to continue their journey on Sunday.
There were not enough hotel beds available, so many had to sleep on the floor at Belfast International Airport.
Officials said the passengers were "remarkably calm and understanding", while police said a passenger was to be charged with disruptive behavior on board an aircraft and common assault.
