Unsafe Chicago Airport runway leads to FAA fine

Chicago’s Department of Aviation is facing a large federal fine over an accident which saw a jet skid off a snowy runway last winter.

The Chicago Department of Aviation failed to ensure safe landing conditions at Chicago O’Hare Airport and could be hit with a $1,567,968 civil penalty from the Federal Aviation Administration.

It did not follow the guidelines of its Snow and Ice Control Plan, the FAA alleges.

Envoy Airlines Flight 412, slid off the runway on 11 November last year damaging its landing gear.

The FAA says at least two consecutive flight crews reported problems with braking three separate times on the same runway.

The CDA failed to restrict operations on that runway and conduct a runway assessment.

It allowed 43 aircraft to land on the runway after the reports of poor braking, until the accident occurred.

The FAA says it previously issued a warning notice for similar violations at Chicago O’Hare in 2015 and 2016.

The Chicago Department of Aviation has 30 days to respond to the FAA’s enforcement letter.
