US airlines improve performance

The US’s financially crippled airlines are performing better than they have for the past seven years, according to new statistics.

According to the US Transportation Department, the ten largest US carriers recently reported an 88% domestic on-time rate, the best since data started being collected in 1995.

An ‘on time’ rate is defined as arriving within 15 minutes of its schedule.

The carriers also recorded their lowest rate of lost baggage since data was first recorded in 1987.
And airlines are ‘bumping’ fewer people of flights, said the DoT.

US Airways reported the best on-time arrival rate in September, at 90.9%, followed by United and American. America West was ranked bottom at 83.9%.
