US airlines reward customers who help Hurricane Harvey charities
United Airlines is encouraging MileagePlus members to pledge aid to victims of Hurricane Harvey by giving away bonus award miles.
United is rewarding customers who donate by September 15 2017 to designated agencies Airlink, Operation USA, Americares, and the American Red Cross.
Bonus miles are up for grabs on a sliding scale.
United will deposit 250 bonus miles for every donation under $100, 500 miles for up to $249 and 1,000 miles for all donations above $250.
A minimum $50 is required to qualify for a bonus miles award.
United has set aside a total of three million miles to be awarded.
The airline also pledged to match the first $200,000 raised for its Hurricane Harvey relief effort.
As of late Monday, nearly $500,000 had been pledged so far on United’s page on the Crowdrise platform.
American Airlines is also handing out miles for donations.
Starting at a minimum of $25, every dollar pledged to designated partner the American Red Cross until September 24 will get members 10 AAdvantage miles.
Meanwhile all United Airlines flight operations from Houston Intercontinental are suspended until at least noon on Thursday August 31, it said.
Flight waivers for travel through Houston and 14 other airports in Texas and Louisiana have been extended through September 5, 2017.
