US Airways counters Southwest in Philly

Thursday, 30 Apr, 2004 0

US Airways-watchers were encouraged to see the airline finally making efforts to confront looming competition in its hub of Philadelphia.

The embattled airline said it would begin offering fares as low as $29 from Philadelphia. The so-called GoFares will start May 7.

The move is obviously an effort to counter Southwest’s entrance into the market, which former chief executive David Siegel characterized as an attempt to “kill” US Airways.

US Airways said it was making the move to simplify its fare structure.

“Low fares are a reality of the marketplace and US Airways is adapting to these changing realities. This wave is only the beginning, as we will continue to roll out GOFares in other markets in the coming months,” said Ben Baldanza, senior vice president for marketing and planning.

GoFares start at $29 each way, with last-minute fares as low as $49 one way. The new fares top out at $499.

An example of fares is $79 from Philadelphia to Chicago, Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando and Tampa.

US Airways plans to add Houston, Los Angeles, Manchester, NH, New Orleans, Raleigh-Durham and West Palm Beach in July.
