US cracks down on Russian airlines
The US is taking enforcement action against three Russian airlines in an attempt to ground their operations.
The Department of Commerce is taking action against Aeroflot, Azur Air and UTair for violating US export controls relating to sanctions.
It bans aircraft that has more than 25% US controlled parts from operating without a license.
It says the airlines operated multiple flights on these aircraft internationally and domestically.
All 34 of Azur Air’s planes are US made, while UTair has 48 and 59 of Aeroflot’s fleet.
The enforcement action also includes parts required to maintain their aircraft.
“These restrictions are significant because it’s obviously difficult to keep flying if you can’t service your plane,” Matthew Axelrod, Commerce assistant secretary for export enforcement said.
The US claims the airlines will ‘largely be unable to continue flying, either internationally or domestically, over time.’
The export controls theoretically ban companies globally from providing any refueling, maintenance, repair, or parts to the airlines.
