US DOT blocks JAL and Hawaiian Airlines JV
The planned joint venture partnership between Japan Air Lines and Hawaiian Airlines has been nixed by the US regulator.
The US department of transportation blocked the partnership’s application for anti-trust immunity as it has ‘not demonstrated how it would function in terms of revenue sharing, pricing and marketing.’
The airlines had hoped to coordinate services on routes between Hawaii and Japan, as well as select routes in Asia.
The DOT had previously said Hawaiian and JAL didn’t need anti-trust immunity based on the type of cooperation they were seeking.
They had pledged to increase capacity by nearly a quarter between Hawaii and Japan.
According to officials at JAL it will try again with a revised application.
